Do UK Satellite Navigation (sat nav) systems work in America?

Hi! We are thinking of going to California for a driving holiday later in the year. We have also been considering buying a Sat Nav for general use in the UK. We were wondering whether if we bought one now it would also cover the US, as if just some do it would affect which one we chose. Which make/model would be our best option (no idea on budget as we've not looked around yet - but preferably not the top of the range very expensive ones). Something straight forward to use would be best. Thanks for your time.|||Most (like Tom Tom) only cover Uk and Europe but I believe you can download upgrades from the internet to some models for other countries.

optitional cost..

and also default it to america..

tom tom are the most known one. but if you get it with america maps on.. obviously u will have to pay for the UK ones..

they aren't that expensive , so due to warrenty issues.. etc would be better to get one in the uk|||A GPS will work anywhere in the world. The satellites they use orbit the entire earth and can be received anywhere. As the others point out, you need the appropriate maps. Most of the brands offer downloads for areas they don't have installed when purchased. Just make sure that the one you buy does offer this download service.
