Hello I am looking to buy sat nav for my car and there are so many to choose from can anyone help?

Satellite navigation|||Don't buy a Navman. I bought one for my husband, and it broke after a month. Fortunately I'd bought it through my work (I work for an electrical retailer) so I got my money back. Now we use TomTom on a Dell Axim X51v pocket PC, and it's MUCH better.|||One that doesn't tell you to turn right onto railway lines.|||Garmin is the very best for the money...my friend tried several different brands and Garmin is the most accurate and reliable|||Tom Tom910|||A tom tom 1 is a good bet.

Its reasonably priced.|||as this is asked under the pda thread, i hope this means you have a pda?

i have a typhoon myguide 3500 with tom tom 6 on a card and installed.....works great...and you have your pda with you all times. (some need an extension antenna though)

for a stand alone sat nav.....tom tom seem by far the best but they also seem to have a common problem, looking through ebay spares or repairs there was a lot of tom toms with a swithing on problem....maybe they are just so much mor epopular, i dont know...just thought i would pass that on.

What smart phones have an independent GPS?

I am looking for any smart phone that has a built in GPS that enables the phone to work as a car navigation system without relaying on the any network but the satellite.|||i have bought the iphone 3gs latley,

you can go on the gps without satillite help for free

when ever yu connect to the internet at home with it, it will update the roads to make sure that you have a recent version!

Car Audio / Navigation systems for Maruti Swift?

Hi Friends,

I am now working in Qatar. I have planned to buy a maruti swift VXI in India (Exactly Cochin, Kerala). I want to have a music system which should have a 7" or 6.1" LCD touch screen option audio system with DVD,MP3 playback and Navigation systems.

Can you please suggest me some good models. Please mention the price range. and see i have a lot of doubts in the navigation system like it will be charged extra money per month basis for using it, and along with the above audio system, the whole things for the navigation like any kind of sensor or communication device to the satellite will come or i have to pay any extra for that. If i am purchasing this equipment from Qatar as it is very cheaply available compared to India i need to change any softwares ect?...

Please give me a suggestion on the above......|||1 din or 2 din depends on the size of your car's dashboard. here is the dvd for swift

Why does TurboTax claim to be like a GPS?

When they are neither an orbiting satellite nor a device that shows your coordinates? Perhaps they mean GPS navigation system?|||Just another senseless marketing gimmick. They want to make it sound like you'll always have direction if you use TurboTax.

Too bad even GPS systems send you through the bad part of town once in awhile. If you have no idea what you're doing, you should seek professional assistance and not try to guess at it with software.

If you have a GPS navigation system in your car please answer this question...Thanks?

Do GPS companies charge a monthly subscription fee to use or activate their products- in the same manner XM Satellite Radio charges a monthly fee to listen to it?|||No - the GPS network is provided by the US Air Force; if you're in the US you're already paying for it with your taxes.

In addition to the receiver, you can pay extra for a mounting kit, batteries, power adapter or hardwire power supply. Also if you want to buy a new map set that will cost extra.|||Things like TomTom don't, you buy the unit and the maps for where you want, that's it.

Other things like Wayfinder on Orange (http://www.wayfinder.com) charge UK拢2 every two weeks.|||No they do not charge a fee. However, you have to buy a new DVD if you want to update your maps every other year or so. Some companies have it where you can pay a fee and the nav system will even tell you how crowded the streets are and if roads are blocked. This will apply only to large metropolitan areas. good luck.|||As far as I know, all GPS units will pick up the satellite signal without monthly costs, or activation fees. Turn it on, and you have a signal for free!

The XM Radio and OnStar services are beyond that, and do have fees.

Is this a good laptop? (Toshiba Satellite A215-S4807)?

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/rdet鈥?/a>

It's a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4807

Main Specs:

-AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-56

-2048MB memory

-160GB hard drive

-15.4" widescreen

It's at Circuit City for $779.99 after a $150 instant rebate. Is it worth it? I'll mainly be using it for studies, since I'm going to be a college freshman, and I'll also use it lightly for music and movies and stuff.|||Sounds like a very nice system at a great price. It probably has Vista Home Premium or even Aero with that much memory. Do yourself a favor when you get to school and don't use Limewire. Get a good anti-virus like AVG free or Avast. Would hate to see you lose everything and have to format to reload.|||I in no way claim to be a techie, but I have this computer and i am happy with it. Since I don't know much about computers, I went to severel friends who do before deciding. One specifically recommended this and it has been great.|||Yes, it's a great laptop. Toshiba makes the best laptops in my opinion.|||It is ok but dell makes some pretty nifty laptops that are better for your needs. Also if you are editing movies or anything I would recommend a mac. Here is a link to a good dell comp for under 1k bucks. http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us%26amp;cs=19%26amp;l=en%26amp;s=dhs%26amp;~section=specs#tabtop I also reccomend not getting vista since it sucks right now. Get xp because it has most of the bugs worked out of it.

I'll mainly be using it for studies, since I'm going to be a college freshman, and I'll also use it lightly for music and movies and stuff.|||The Turion TL-56 is a good processor but the slowest of the ones I would recommend (anything slower wouldn't be worth having). It does tend to run hot so you will notice a warm laptop and it does tend to suck back a lot of power so not that great battery life. A core 2 duo would be faster with better battery life.

2048MB Ram is just what you want for a laptop. 1GB would work but not great for Vista, 4GB is way too much money.

160GB Hard Drive is big for a laptop. The 120GB tends to be the sweet spot where you save money but still get a large drive. Good drive but the price of the machine is higher than you might want because of it.

15.4" Is what I have for monitor and my Toshiba looks great with it.

The x1200 video card on it is also pretty good. You should be able to play a few games if you want (at low settings) and it is way better than the Intel GMA you see on a lot of cheap laptops.

Overall: You would probably be happy with your laptop's POWER but you may not be happy with its portability. It is a bit on the heavy side and lugging it around from class to class could be an issue for you.

If it were me I would look at either a more expensive laptop (by a bit) in the Dell 1420 (lighter and about same power but about $300 more) or go with something a little less expensive and lighter.|||You can get a comparable laptop for the price with a 17" screen.

Toshiba Satellite 17" Widescreen Notebook PC (P205-S6267)

鈥?Intel Core Duo T2350

鈥?120GB hard drive

鈥?Burns DVDs and CDs

鈥?2GB of DDR2 memory

鈥?Built-in 802.11agn wireless

鈥?Windows Vista Home Premium|||its pretty good. not the best, but its good|||Those specs are good (not the best though), although they are very vague, and only a few factors of the computer you want to look at.

-AMD is an ok processor, but you'll notice the same computer with "equivelent" Intel processor will cost slightly more because it's a better processor. Up to you, sounds like AMD should work for your uses.

-The screen size is fine, but for a really nice screen i'd make sure it's got "wsxga"(good) or "wuxga"(better)

-If you want a faster file-access hard drive, try to get a 7200rpm hard drive, i'm guessing the one you listed is a 5400. (the extra rpm is worth the extra $100 or so)

My sister got a Satellite about a year ago.... It's a decent computer, but lately she's been having a problem with her computer either shutting down right after you power it up (seconds after, before anything loads) or if it does start up the screen remains off/black.... I've read up and found this is not the only Toshiba Satellite to do this. I think that Toshiba's Bios is the problem..... So be mindful of that, and do some homework on problems with that specific model|||Yes, it's great! I have a Toshiba Satellite very close to that. I bought mine in January. You won't regret it!! Great laptop. I use mine numerous hours per day. One tip. I would buy at CompUSA rather than Circuit City. Circuit City's warranty plan sucks and it is very difficult to get repairs done. CompUSA is a breeze! They have on-site techs. Only thing I had done was extra memory added. Mine only came with 1G. Also great price! CompUSA will match.|||That is more than what you will need, trust me. I recommend you to visit bestbuy.com they have almost the same models that circuit city has with the same price but without the rebates. This is an excellent choice go for the toshiba.|||Yes. I would highly recommend a Toshiba laptop. In my opinion, Toshiba makes the best laptops.|||get an HP instead. they look better and perform better

Tom tom sat nav? on helicopters?

Do you think an actual "tom tom" sat nav would work on a helicopter????

i know they have far more sophisticated satellite navigation system,

But would a normal tom tom work??????|||I have to agree with the previous answer of that it would most definitely work in a light aircraft or helicopter, probably better than being used in a car actually as there will be less direct interference because of atmospheric conditions, trees and buildings etc.... Essentially you have moved the device closer to the source of the GPS signal thus a better reception!..... With regards the use of the said item for purposes of navigation.... No good! As already stipulated the device displays road navigation not point to point as the crow flies!! Aero navigation GPS devices have software allowing for drift, course correction, sectional chart-like topographic data, built-in obstacle database, altitude callouts etc etc

So surmising, if you want to navigate a route tracking roads doing 150mph at 100 feet being constantly harassed by speed camera warnings and not bothered about airspace restrictions, then yeah go ahead and use your tom tom!... Else suggest the Garmin GPSMAP 496

Have fun!!|||No it wouldn't!|||In theory it should work, however in practise the tom tom is set up for car or people travelling on roads and as a result the tom tom will try and fit your location to the nearest road. This will result in a lot of confusion as it may hop from one road to another.|||Nothing that sophisticated is approved by the FAA. We navigate with equipment that was outdated 10 years ago for the most part. In fact, I generally just go with the charts and GPS as a backup.|||electronic nav for helicopters is only for advanced combat helicopters its just radio stacks and maps for most others|||As mentioned elsewhere it would attempt to lock onto known roads, but one of the displays would give a true position, and popssibly course to destination. A bigger problem would be the rotor blades spinning overhead, which would probably upset the reception badly. You're not supposed to use uncertified instruments for air navigation anyway|||Nope. Apart from difficulty in finding a signal, it's designed to find roads and will get sorely confused!|||take the next left on to the railway tracks and through the bridge to the oncoming train!.

yeehhhhhhhhhh actually no if i was you I'd keep it in the car the ones meant for helicopter's and plains are some what more advanced!.|||Probably. I use my deLorme GPS on my laptop on commercial flights by placing the GPS receiver on the window. It will NOT work as an "real" air navigation device, but it will show you where you are.

Are people just too lazy to read a map

Isn't that why their cars have satellite navigation systems.|||Not all of us. Reading a map while driving is certainly not a good idea. Sometimes using maps isn't much good for local roads and some of our road signs leave much to be desired, e.g. places and directions "go missing" between junctions and roundabouts to re-appear at the next one (if you've taken the right route) and/or give the directions you need too late for safe manoeuvring.

I much prefer SatNav, but I must admit it can be annoying if I turn it on from home ... "at the next roundabout take the second exit" gets a bit monotonous after a while!|||not all people are lazy to read a map|||yup - im def too lazy to read one - why waste time reading a map when you have tom tom??|||some ppl claim they cant read maps, maybe lack of spatcial awareness|||Not everyone and of the others not all the time even. Sure they are not perfect but they are a timesaver - you can't read a map and drive and the same time.|||YES!!!

technology is just something to make our lives easier.

=]|||No, I think they are just too lazy to fold it back up|||Only new/newer cars have sat-navs fitted..I prefer using maps, little chance of being sent the wrong way(providing you can understand maps in the first place!) |||Probably. Those sat navs are really annoying anyway, I don't know how they put up with them and the bloody condescending voice that's recorded on them.|||my dad is sooo bad with directions even when he has a map|||I know I am. |||I am useless with both, I still get lost with a sat nav, the thing repeats 'you have missed your exit, turn around' at me !|||Some people just aren't good at reading a map and navigating a driver.

Are you sure the radio is Sirius equipped?

How to use gps on nokia C7 without using internet?

I know it's impossible to have wi-fi everywhere so I think information must come from the satellite. But I am new to this phone, so I don't know the steps. I need your help. What I need is the navigation system while I am walking or in a vehicle to find out where I am.

Android/ Google maps navigation?

recently saw a demonstration of the new android system and I was impressed!

Particularly the 2 version which has navigation combined with Google maps-only thing I can't figure out and which is surprisingly not mentioned on any reviews. Normally one would have to be on the Internet to see Google maps, but of course when navigating this is not really practical as often Internet access may not be available.

So does this Android/Google maps navigation work just by accessing satellite like a GPS or does one have to be connected to the Internet as well to see the proper Google maps?

Another thing I will not be using a contract but want to use it with my old Sim card so probably won't use 3G just normal phone, so I imagine the Google maps navigation will not work with ordinary pay as you go Sim card?|||It uses the GPS satellites to get the phones location and the data connection over the internet for the maps. It is certainly designed with the assumption that you will have a data plan attached to your sim card.

However most android phones also have wifi and the application saves the directions and maps it needs in case you lose phone coverage during the trip. So as long as you set the route you want to take somewhere with wifi coverage (e.g. at home) and don't go off route it should in theory work without a cell network data link.

Is it necessary to Sign In in OVI maps 3.03 with the OVI account in nokia 5800 in order to use GPS navigation?

I have the nokia 5800 xpressmusic. I have installed the new OVI Maps 3.03 with unlimited free navigation license and also installed the map data. Still I can't use the GPS navigation in Nokia Maps. It has worked 2/25 times of trying. I sometimes get the satellite data too in open area with a min of 4 satellites still I cant use navigation in my OVI maps nor the my position feature. It doesnt catch the satellite. Always shows ''Waiting for GPS''. Please help. Should I Sign In with my OVI account?|||It doesn't require signing in at all .. It doesn't even require an account at OVI maps.

but you're required to open your GPS for few minutes in an open area until it receives the GPS signal from satellites to be able to calculate your position then you can start Navigation only after GPS signal received and your position detected by the phone. This usually requires at least 4 or 5 satellites to detect your position. in an open area it might require 2- 6 minutes in average.

As long as it is still "Waiting for GPS" it wont be able to detect your position nor start navigation.

Which type of orbit (polar or geostationary) can satellites be put into as 'navigation beacons'?

Low -Earth orbits are obligatory for several reasons, the most important one being that the emitting power of the beacon goes up as the square of the distance. Geostationary orbits would require 40 times as big a power source, as a beacon in low-Earth orbit would need. |||Heck.. just about any type of orbit. The GPS system utilizes about 28 different, low-Earth orbits for their system. If you want a satellite to remain over one spot, turning with the Earth once per day, then you want a geostationary orbit. |||The polar orbits are better because it covers the same areas (signals not distorted) at different times of the year. Global warming and cooling linked to the sunspot cycle

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12鈥?/a>

The reversal of the poles is attributed to the harmonic cycle of the magnetic fields of the sun.

Polar reversals can be calculated precisely on the basis of the sunspot cycle theory or the magnetic field theory

A study reveals Global Positioning System receivers to be unexpectedly vulnerable to bursts of radio noise produced by solar flares, created by explosions in the Sun's atmosphere.

When solar activity peaks in 2011 and 2012, it could cause widespread disruption to aircraft navigation and emergency location systems that rely heavily on satellite navigation data

When the solar particles reach our planet, the electromagnetically-loaded particles will move in a spiral along the magnetic lines: from the magnetic north pole to the magnetic south pole and back.

Will devastation happen 2012?|||Yes, the poles will shift. No it's not from the sun. We will be in alignment with our sun and the center of the galaxy, it happens every 25,000 years. The amount of gravity and the magnetic forces will cause our poles to shift, not from the sun spots.|||Why not read a real science book? Solar activity runs in 11 year cycles. This affects snowfall rates, among other things.

The earth is constantly being bombarded by solar particles. It generates something known as auroras.|||Mayan Prophecy? Sure, their calendar ends in 2012. So what? My calendar ends on December 31 this year, it doesn't mean the world is going to end.|||The short answer is: of course not.

As you say: the fluctuations in sunspot activity are regular as the tide -- it has happened over and over in the past, and we still lived to tell about it.|||no. the mayan prophecy won't come true.|||Science does not take the supernatural into consideration. It looks at the facts, and makes determinations based on that.|||We only have a few years to see what will happen so I won't speculate. To add to your info, scientist have perceived a great loss in the earths magnetic field over the last 200 years. Magnetic fields are shifting, this could wreak havoc on our sat elite systems. That big blackout a few years back was caused by the current in the hydro lines abruptly changing to the opposite direction, say if it was flowing south, then wham, its going north. Kinda like the poles flipping.

Bee colony collapse is an ominous sign. Could it be the magnetic fields shifting so that bee's are losing their way? Its just as plausible as cell phone interference.|||Naw, the way things are going with Bush/Cheney and Iran and the middle east, they will have long since destroyed the world before then.|||The Mayans didn't make a prophecy, their calender just ended at that year. There was no explanation given, no prophesies made.

I'll leave the rest of the dribble to be refuted by others.|||it will be interesting to see if in 2012 you come back and admit you're wrong|||Devastation will happen in 2012!

It will also happen in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017...|||"The reversal of the poles is attributed to the harmonic cycle of the magnetic fields of the sun."

I stopped reading here. Nothing but Pseudo-scientific hogwash.|||The last sunspot peak occurred in 2001. Prior to that, in 1990. In neither of those years did navigation systems go haywire.

Pole reversals happen with far less frequently. During a pole reversal, it is expected that the Van Allen Belts will be minimal or absent for a period of time, allowing more charged particles to hit the atmosphere directly, rather than channeling to the poles. Since this happens anywhere from 50,000 to 10,000,000 years apart, there is no way to say when the next will be. There is no correlation between increased extinction and pole reversals, so I'm not too worried about it. Also, people often take flights that cross into the arctic circle and are at greatly increased exposure to charged particle radiation, with no ill effects. The Van Allen belts do not eliminate charged particles, they direct them to the poles. That's why we have Aurorae, or Northern Lights.

The biggest impact would be on magnetic compasses, but we rely mostly on GPS these days.

Best mobile phone with satnav?

I am considering upgrading my mobile to one that gives good local satellite navigation and and video/photo. Which is considered the best combination?|||XDA orbit has really good sat nav and good unit in general.

Nokia N95 8gb has sat nav but does have its faults but is very usable, also has a 5mp camera.|||Nokia N95|||Nokia N95

How to set bluetooth for 2006 VW passat with nav?

I just bought a 2006 Passat with blue tooth and navigation. I see the phone icon on the steering wheel but I'm not sure how to sync up my phone. I've seen advise to use the radio menu but I have satellite radio as part of the navigation system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.|||Consult to the dealer or the handbook in your car.|||There is no bluetooth availability in 2006. The button is there... but doesn't work.

Which trim level/grade of Honda CR-V should I buy?

I'm thinking of buying a Honda CR-V but I'm confused on all the trim levels offered. Should I get the LX, EX, EX-L or the EX-L with Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System鈩?

Please advice.

And what colour will look nice?|||l Iike the EX-L in Black.|||The LX gets you the basics like powered accessories, air-conditioning and a CD player. The high-volume EX model adds niceties like keyless entry, alloy wheels, an upgraded stereo, moonroof and privacy glass. For those who want it all on the uplevel EX-L, the available nav system also includes a rearview camera, satellite radio and a subwoofer.

Does the Garmin Nuvi 350 satellite signal screen take into consideration the non-GPS signals...?

...that the unit can receive?

I am referring to the other signals (not traffic) that are used to make navigation more precise. I forget the abbreviation for these signals. I am wondering if when the unit says that the accuracy is 16 feet, for example, if that is only via the GPS signals or with all available signals. I also don't know how to tell if the unit is currently benefitting from those other signals.|||As far as I know, it uses only the GPS satellite signals. It also 'remembers' where it was, so if you switch it on, it will try to verify that position first. If that doesn't work, it will start looking for satellites in general.

Hope this helps.

Satellite radio xm for my car?

So I have a 2008 lexus is250 no navigation but with satellite ready and the fin antenna on top of my car. Is it possible to get xmradio without a receiver? What would I need to buy? And how much would it be? I went to best buy yesterday and they told me to get the receiver and that a different antenna will be added to the roof of my car and that's not what I want. I have my fin antenna ready for satellite right? Any help would be great.|||Yes there is a sirius and xm kit for lexus, you can decide what unit you install in the vehicle, sirius is Better

it is called Vais Tech SLX2 and go for about $280

the antenna plug is in the glove compartment area and it will work if you remove the plug plastic or change the connector, the antenna internals are almost the same and it will work with any satellite radio

call 888-231-0395|||Ask your Lexus dealer, but a receiver from Best Buy with a new antenna will cost less.

Minimum number of satellite signals?

minimum number of satellite signals required by a GPS navigation system to make an accurate position fix is

a. 1

b. 2

c. 3

d. 4

what is the correct answer?|||in order to get a fully-constrained position based on GPS satellite signals alone, you need a minimum of 4 svs. Under certain conditions (and assumptions), you can get by with 3 but that really depends on the Nav engine of the GPS receiver in question.

A misconception is that more than 4 svs increases accuracy. That is incorrect. More satellites yields:

- a more statistically confident solution (due to overdetermination)

- the ability to detect a bad measurement of a satellite and possibly remove the bad measurement

Do London cab-drivers still have to take a test, even with?

Today's satellite navigation systems available?|||Yes. The test also includes History of London|||Yes.|||Yes .. have to do the "knowledge"|||To be a black cab driver it is still a requirement to take and pass "The Knowledge" exam. This is to ensure that black cab drivers not only know where to go, but which are the best routes during rush hour and where the alternative routes are when delays occur (e.g. due to roadworks or police road closures).

Mini cab drivers in London habitually use SatNav, but this is frowned on by black cab drivers.

In my experience, black cab drivers will invariably get you where you want to go much more quickly because of their knowledge of London's roads.|||sat nav is on occasion the equivalent of a blind folded man leading an Eskimo through a dessert looking for an ice berg

What is an acquisition satellite?

I can't find a definition anywhere, but I think it has something to do with GPS/Aviation navigation. Has anyone heard of it?|||In astronomy terms it is a planetary satellite that did not form with the planet but fell into orbit when it passed too close to the planet. An example would be Mars' two moons Phobos and Deimos.

If you are talking about artificial satellites then it would mean a satellite intended to collect (aquire) information using on board instruments and relay the information back to earth. Examples would be NOAA Weather Satellites and yes I think GPS/Aviation and navigation satellites would also fall into that category... but I'm not sure.

Can you hire sat nav. systems in the UK ? If so where and how much?

I need the use of a satellite navigation system for about a week. It is not worth paying all that money for something I will only use the once. Is there anywhere you can hire them?|||YES you can and for about 拢1.13 a day check out this web site www.zintech.co.uk good luck|||Sorry I don't know about hiring one, but I do have a suggestion. If you don't have any luck, buy one second hand off eBay and then Sell it on once you are done with it. I have a friend that has done this several times with different things he required for a short time. He has even made a profit a couple of times!

Good Luck.|||I know this isn't going to help you directly, but it may give you a little hope. I have just returned from a trip to Holland, and can remember waiting in traffic, and looking at an advert that gave information on Sat. Nav. hire (I speak and read Dutch). As I was only 'passing time' so to speak, I didn't take much notice of the name, but it may well have been Hallfords, so it may be worth checking their U.K. site.

Good luck!

In Fallout, why does your Pipboy show a map of the terrain outside?

I'm not sure if this was explained somewhere. Your Pipboy is given to you by the high-ranking members of the Vault. If they didn't want you to leave the Vault, why did they install software which gave it the ability to know the outside terrain? Surely there would have to be satellite navigation or a pre-conceived map of the Wastelands?

SILLY.|||Good point, but I can explain it. Most Vaults (except 101) were meant to be open at some point, therefore ppl would need to know where they were going. The reason a pipboy 3000 has it is because pipboys are standard tech to every vault all with the same programing (as long as its the same Model)|||I don't believe this ever comes up! And I agree, it is a bit of a plot hole.

It would have been nice if it had paused and said "Aquiring new topographical information" before the first time it shows you the world map.

If we're looking for possible explanations, perhaps your dad uploads it before he runs off?

It's still a great game though :)|||Good spot! It must've been your old man, he's a cheeky bugger!

Question about fitting 2003 Renault M茅gane sat nav?

Right I have a 2003 M茅gane and am looking to fit the original Carminat satellite navigation system. I've seen the head unit on eBay and will obviously need a new central display at the top ofthe dash for the instructions. Anything else? What about the GPS signal?

Thanks|||you may need to plug in to a suitable diagnostic machine to configure the hardware|||You will need to fit a GPS aerial and co-axial cables.

What would be the minimum basic requirement for a car other than 4 wheels..?

I have tried to make a list, I wonder if you can add to it or leave a comment?

1. Safety - Belts, Air bags, Side Impact beam.

2. Air-conditioning %26amp; Heater.

2. FM/CD/Mp3 Player.

3. Good Leg room. (dont want to be cramped).

4. Satellite Navigation System. (especially when ur in unfamiliar area).

5. Back Parking Sensor (U dont want to back up onto a kid hiding behind your car).

6. Spoilers - Dont want other car doors to take the carpaint away.

I would say these are an absolute must and should in no way be considered accessories.

I wonder what were the reason for the foll:

1. Moon / Sun Roof - To see the NorthStar? or to talk to God?

2. DVD-with LCD screen Player - What do you watch in a car with all the head-movement for god sake? the News? - I thought thats what the radio was for. I can understanding watching a movie if the Journey was around 3 hrs. or more But if it was so long I would prefer a short nap.

3. Fog Lights - If u drive in thick fog then ur risking ur life.|||Actually the "BARE NECESSITIES" of most vehciles are now,

1. air bags/seat belts- made necessary in late 80's early 90's

2. air conditioning/heater-made necessary in early to mid-80's

3. am/fm radio- never necessary but raised value of car in 50's

4. 4 wheels, engine, transmission, brakes, and body.

Anything else is just accessories. Even Power Steering!!!

To answer the rest of your question...

1. to have the wind in your hair w/o messing it up.

2. it's not for you to watch, it's for your kids, you need to stay focused on the road.Although that never happens...

3. Fog lights do actually help, they provide light low enough to the ground so that you can actually see the ground in a foggy situation.|||4 wheels isn't really a requirement. The first car only had 3.|||Well you can throw away 1 true six. There not regiments. Neither are the other three. So you don't seem to have a clue. What you need is a Fred Flinestone car.And that didn't even have wheels . So it looks like you lose all the way. Good thing your not designing cars.|||I see you don't find the steering wheel important. Guess you should continue to drive your go-cart with the string steering. I also like to have a spare tire, jack and a wheel wrench,. So, there is only one in your list. A heater I can and have travelled without the rest. And I like a comfortable drivers seat with a cloth fabric that was temp controlled.

But it really is moot.

You get what the automanufacturers decide to make. They are the ones who dictate what the car will have in it motorwise, transmission, wheel size...and what it will look like, what color it is gonna be and if it is a gas guzzler or not, whether the wrenches in your tool box is adequate to fix it or they have new fasteners that require new tools; and whether parts are interchangeable from older models.

Choice has been taken away and we are not even aware of it.

Where Is The Best Place To Position Your Sat Nav?

Hi everyone! I am wondering where is the best (i.e safest and best place visually) to position your satellite navigation in the car? Thank you in advance for any answers! Xx|||If you have one that talks to you I'd just put it in your cup holder. If you have to see it then mount it on the window under your mirror.|||Maybe your dash, but many have suction cups, so that's not an option. Wherever you can see it comfortably, but it doesn't obstruct your view of the road and your surroundings.|||in the middle of the dash

How can I affordably and reliably access the interet from a container ship?

The ship sails across the Pacific and officers and crew have no access to the satellite(used for navigation only) . Is there some device I can buy or rent? Pls be specific and detailed in your replies.|||I think you're out of luck...And the ships navagation woiuld have nothing to do with the internet ! If you're out in the ocean, the only thing that MIGHT work would be a dish antenna. Of course then the ship can't be moving. Sorry, I think it's something that can't be done.|||there is no cheap way to go about this

I'd really like dealer installed NAV in my new car. Why are they cd driven & not satellite?

I heard if you get navigation "in dash" that it can only be updated by buying cd's to load. The dash mounted types, Garmin, TomTom, receive satellite signals and are constantly updated. I really hate anything on my dash or stuck on the winshield. Why aren't "in dash" kinds satellite driven too? I don't understand why the same antenna that runs your satellite radio couldn't run your nav too? Or maybe you can order one to be installed that is?

If not, how do you know how often to update, and are the cd's expensive?|||I think I see what you are asking, the satellites transmit a signal which your GPS interprets into a position and superimposes the position onto a built in database of maps, both systems whether built in or windshield mounted need to have their map database updated periodically, the new tom toms you can just hook them to your computer and update from their website. The built in models you need to buy CD's. Your position is updated continuously, the maps you need to update yourself. Sat radio and GPS receive different signals so different antennas, on cars with factory antennas you don't even see them.|||Nissan "Zen Ren" DVDs are $145 each and get updated every 3 or four years. Nissan system uses global positioning too. It is just the software files are so massive all the roads of the western hemisphere ponits of interest, malls ect... Most of the in cars sytems have some advantages the TOM TOM and Garmin do not. Like not breaking a side window reaching in and steal it...There gos $500 not covered by your insurance unless you pay extra.|||The disc only contains the map that you see on the screen. The country side is constantly changing with new roads, neighborhoods, and infrastructure. The map must be updated in order for the system to be accurate. Whether it be by download or disc, all nav systems require that the maps be updated.

They all use the GPS system, it's how your nav knows where you are on earth and then displays the little arrow as it moves along the map.

As far as antennas go, a regular old car radio antenna doesn't have enough surface area to receive a sattelite signal.
