Hello I am looking to buy sat nav for my car and there are so many to choose from can anyone help?

Satellite navigation|||Don't buy a Navman. I bought one for my husband, and it broke after a month. Fortunately I'd bought it through my work (I work for an electrical retailer) so I got my money back. Now we use TomTom on a Dell Axim X51v pocket PC, and it's MUCH better.|||One that doesn't tell you to turn right onto railway lines.|||Garmin is the very best for the money...my friend tried several different brands and Garmin is the most accurate and reliable|||Tom Tom910|||A tom tom 1 is a good bet.

Its reasonably priced.|||as this is asked under the pda thread, i hope this means you have a pda?

i have a typhoon myguide 3500 with tom tom 6 on a card and installed.....works great...and you have your pda with you all times. (some need an extension antenna though)

for a stand alone sat nav.....tom tom seem by far the best but they also seem to have a common problem, looking through ebay spares or repairs there was a lot of tom toms with a swithing on problem....maybe they are just so much mor epopular, i dont know...just thought i would pass that on.

What smart phones have an independent GPS?

I am looking for any smart phone that has a built in GPS that enables the phone to work as a car navigation system without relaying on the any network but the satellite.|||i have bought the iphone 3gs latley,

you can go on the gps without satillite help for free

when ever yu connect to the internet at home with it, it will update the roads to make sure that you have a recent version!

Car Audio / Navigation systems for Maruti Swift?

Hi Friends,

I am now working in Qatar. I have planned to buy a maruti swift VXI in India (Exactly Cochin, Kerala). I want to have a music system which should have a 7" or 6.1" LCD touch screen option audio system with DVD,MP3 playback and Navigation systems.

Can you please suggest me some good models. Please mention the price range. and see i have a lot of doubts in the navigation system like it will be charged extra money per month basis for using it, and along with the above audio system, the whole things for the navigation like any kind of sensor or communication device to the satellite will come or i have to pay any extra for that. If i am purchasing this equipment from Qatar as it is very cheaply available compared to India i need to change any softwares ect?...

Please give me a suggestion on the above......|||1 din or 2 din depends on the size of your car's dashboard. here is the dvd for swift

Why does TurboTax claim to be like a GPS?

When they are neither an orbiting satellite nor a device that shows your coordinates? Perhaps they mean GPS navigation system?|||Just another senseless marketing gimmick. They want to make it sound like you'll always have direction if you use TurboTax.

Too bad even GPS systems send you through the bad part of town once in awhile. If you have no idea what you're doing, you should seek professional assistance and not try to guess at it with software.

If you have a GPS navigation system in your car please answer this question...Thanks?

Do GPS companies charge a monthly subscription fee to use or activate their products- in the same manner XM Satellite Radio charges a monthly fee to listen to it?|||No - the GPS network is provided by the US Air Force; if you're in the US you're already paying for it with your taxes.

In addition to the receiver, you can pay extra for a mounting kit, batteries, power adapter or hardwire power supply. Also if you want to buy a new map set that will cost extra.|||Things like TomTom don't, you buy the unit and the maps for where you want, that's it.

Other things like Wayfinder on Orange (http://www.wayfinder.com) charge UK拢2 every two weeks.|||No they do not charge a fee. However, you have to buy a new DVD if you want to update your maps every other year or so. Some companies have it where you can pay a fee and the nav system will even tell you how crowded the streets are and if roads are blocked. This will apply only to large metropolitan areas. good luck.|||As far as I know, all GPS units will pick up the satellite signal without monthly costs, or activation fees. Turn it on, and you have a signal for free!

The XM Radio and OnStar services are beyond that, and do have fees.

Is this a good laptop? (Toshiba Satellite A215-S4807)?

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/rdet鈥?/a>

It's a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4807

Main Specs:

-AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-56

-2048MB memory

-160GB hard drive

-15.4" widescreen

It's at Circuit City for $779.99 after a $150 instant rebate. Is it worth it? I'll mainly be using it for studies, since I'm going to be a college freshman, and I'll also use it lightly for music and movies and stuff.|||Sounds like a very nice system at a great price. It probably has Vista Home Premium or even Aero with that much memory. Do yourself a favor when you get to school and don't use Limewire. Get a good anti-virus like AVG free or Avast. Would hate to see you lose everything and have to format to reload.|||I in no way claim to be a techie, but I have this computer and i am happy with it. Since I don't know much about computers, I went to severel friends who do before deciding. One specifically recommended this and it has been great.|||Yes, it's a great laptop. Toshiba makes the best laptops in my opinion.|||It is ok but dell makes some pretty nifty laptops that are better for your needs. Also if you are editing movies or anything I would recommend a mac. Here is a link to a good dell comp for under 1k bucks. http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1210?c=us%26amp;cs=19%26amp;l=en%26amp;s=dhs%26amp;~section=specs#tabtop I also reccomend not getting vista since it sucks right now. Get xp because it has most of the bugs worked out of it.

I'll mainly be using it for studies, since I'm going to be a college freshman, and I'll also use it lightly for music and movies and stuff.|||The Turion TL-56 is a good processor but the slowest of the ones I would recommend (anything slower wouldn't be worth having). It does tend to run hot so you will notice a warm laptop and it does tend to suck back a lot of power so not that great battery life. A core 2 duo would be faster with better battery life.

2048MB Ram is just what you want for a laptop. 1GB would work but not great for Vista, 4GB is way too much money.

160GB Hard Drive is big for a laptop. The 120GB tends to be the sweet spot where you save money but still get a large drive. Good drive but the price of the machine is higher than you might want because of it.

15.4" Is what I have for monitor and my Toshiba looks great with it.

The x1200 video card on it is also pretty good. You should be able to play a few games if you want (at low settings) and it is way better than the Intel GMA you see on a lot of cheap laptops.

Overall: You would probably be happy with your laptop's POWER but you may not be happy with its portability. It is a bit on the heavy side and lugging it around from class to class could be an issue for you.

If it were me I would look at either a more expensive laptop (by a bit) in the Dell 1420 (lighter and about same power but about $300 more) or go with something a little less expensive and lighter.|||You can get a comparable laptop for the price with a 17" screen.

Toshiba Satellite 17" Widescreen Notebook PC (P205-S6267)

鈥?Intel Core Duo T2350

鈥?120GB hard drive

鈥?Burns DVDs and CDs

鈥?2GB of DDR2 memory

鈥?Built-in 802.11agn wireless

鈥?Windows Vista Home Premium|||its pretty good. not the best, but its good|||Those specs are good (not the best though), although they are very vague, and only a few factors of the computer you want to look at.

-AMD is an ok processor, but you'll notice the same computer with "equivelent" Intel processor will cost slightly more because it's a better processor. Up to you, sounds like AMD should work for your uses.

-The screen size is fine, but for a really nice screen i'd make sure it's got "wsxga"(good) or "wuxga"(better)

-If you want a faster file-access hard drive, try to get a 7200rpm hard drive, i'm guessing the one you listed is a 5400. (the extra rpm is worth the extra $100 or so)

My sister got a Satellite about a year ago.... It's a decent computer, but lately she's been having a problem with her computer either shutting down right after you power it up (seconds after, before anything loads) or if it does start up the screen remains off/black.... I've read up and found this is not the only Toshiba Satellite to do this. I think that Toshiba's Bios is the problem..... So be mindful of that, and do some homework on problems with that specific model|||Yes, it's great! I have a Toshiba Satellite very close to that. I bought mine in January. You won't regret it!! Great laptop. I use mine numerous hours per day. One tip. I would buy at CompUSA rather than Circuit City. Circuit City's warranty plan sucks and it is very difficult to get repairs done. CompUSA is a breeze! They have on-site techs. Only thing I had done was extra memory added. Mine only came with 1G. Also great price! CompUSA will match.|||That is more than what you will need, trust me. I recommend you to visit bestbuy.com they have almost the same models that circuit city has with the same price but without the rebates. This is an excellent choice go for the toshiba.|||Yes. I would highly recommend a Toshiba laptop. In my opinion, Toshiba makes the best laptops.|||get an HP instead. they look better and perform better

Tom tom sat nav? on helicopters?

Do you think an actual "tom tom" sat nav would work on a helicopter????

i know they have far more sophisticated satellite navigation system,

But would a normal tom tom work??????|||I have to agree with the previous answer of that it would most definitely work in a light aircraft or helicopter, probably better than being used in a car actually as there will be less direct interference because of atmospheric conditions, trees and buildings etc.... Essentially you have moved the device closer to the source of the GPS signal thus a better reception!..... With regards the use of the said item for purposes of navigation.... No good! As already stipulated the device displays road navigation not point to point as the crow flies!! Aero navigation GPS devices have software allowing for drift, course correction, sectional chart-like topographic data, built-in obstacle database, altitude callouts etc etc

So surmising, if you want to navigate a route tracking roads doing 150mph at 100 feet being constantly harassed by speed camera warnings and not bothered about airspace restrictions, then yeah go ahead and use your tom tom!... Else suggest the Garmin GPSMAP 496

Have fun!!|||No it wouldn't!|||In theory it should work, however in practise the tom tom is set up for car or people travelling on roads and as a result the tom tom will try and fit your location to the nearest road. This will result in a lot of confusion as it may hop from one road to another.|||Nothing that sophisticated is approved by the FAA. We navigate with equipment that was outdated 10 years ago for the most part. In fact, I generally just go with the charts and GPS as a backup.|||electronic nav for helicopters is only for advanced combat helicopters its just radio stacks and maps for most others|||As mentioned elsewhere it would attempt to lock onto known roads, but one of the displays would give a true position, and popssibly course to destination. A bigger problem would be the rotor blades spinning overhead, which would probably upset the reception badly. You're not supposed to use uncertified instruments for air navigation anyway|||Nope. Apart from difficulty in finding a signal, it's designed to find roads and will get sorely confused!|||take the next left on to the railway tracks and through the bridge to the oncoming train!.

yeehhhhhhhhhh actually no if i was you I'd keep it in the car the ones meant for helicopter's and plains are some what more advanced!.|||Probably. I use my deLorme GPS on my laptop on commercial flights by placing the GPS receiver on the window. It will NOT work as an "real" air navigation device, but it will show you where you are.

Are people just too lazy to read a map

Isn't that why their cars have satellite navigation systems.|||Not all of us. Reading a map while driving is certainly not a good idea. Sometimes using maps isn't much good for local roads and some of our road signs leave much to be desired, e.g. places and directions "go missing" between junctions and roundabouts to re-appear at the next one (if you've taken the right route) and/or give the directions you need too late for safe manoeuvring.

I much prefer SatNav, but I must admit it can be annoying if I turn it on from home ... "at the next roundabout take the second exit" gets a bit monotonous after a while!|||not all people are lazy to read a map|||yup - im def too lazy to read one - why waste time reading a map when you have tom tom??|||some ppl claim they cant read maps, maybe lack of spatcial awareness|||Not everyone and of the others not all the time even. Sure they are not perfect but they are a timesaver - you can't read a map and drive and the same time.|||YES!!!

technology is just something to make our lives easier.

=]|||No, I think they are just too lazy to fold it back up|||Only new/newer cars have sat-navs fitted..I prefer using maps, little chance of being sent the wrong way(providing you can understand maps in the first place!) |||Probably. Those sat navs are really annoying anyway, I don't know how they put up with them and the bloody condescending voice that's recorded on them.|||my dad is sooo bad with directions even when he has a map|||I know I am. |||I am useless with both, I still get lost with a sat nav, the thing repeats 'you have missed your exit, turn around' at me !|||Some people just aren't good at reading a map and navigating a driver.

Are you sure the radio is Sirius equipped?

How to use gps on nokia C7 without using internet?

I know it's impossible to have wi-fi everywhere so I think information must come from the satellite. But I am new to this phone, so I don't know the steps. I need your help. What I need is the navigation system while I am walking or in a vehicle to find out where I am.

Android/ Google maps navigation?

recently saw a demonstration of the new android system and I was impressed!

Particularly the 2 version which has navigation combined with Google maps-only thing I can't figure out and which is surprisingly not mentioned on any reviews. Normally one would have to be on the Internet to see Google maps, but of course when navigating this is not really practical as often Internet access may not be available.

So does this Android/Google maps navigation work just by accessing satellite like a GPS or does one have to be connected to the Internet as well to see the proper Google maps?

Another thing I will not be using a contract but want to use it with my old Sim card so probably won't use 3G just normal phone, so I imagine the Google maps navigation will not work with ordinary pay as you go Sim card?|||It uses the GPS satellites to get the phones location and the data connection over the internet for the maps. It is certainly designed with the assumption that you will have a data plan attached to your sim card.

However most android phones also have wifi and the application saves the directions and maps it needs in case you lose phone coverage during the trip. So as long as you set the route you want to take somewhere with wifi coverage (e.g. at home) and don't go off route it should in theory work without a cell network data link.

Is it necessary to Sign In in OVI maps 3.03 with the OVI account in nokia 5800 in order to use GPS navigation?

I have the nokia 5800 xpressmusic. I have installed the new OVI Maps 3.03 with unlimited free navigation license and also installed the map data. Still I can't use the GPS navigation in Nokia Maps. It has worked 2/25 times of trying. I sometimes get the satellite data too in open area with a min of 4 satellites still I cant use navigation in my OVI maps nor the my position feature. It doesnt catch the satellite. Always shows ''Waiting for GPS''. Please help. Should I Sign In with my OVI account?|||It doesn't require signing in at all .. It doesn't even require an account at OVI maps.

but you're required to open your GPS for few minutes in an open area until it receives the GPS signal from satellites to be able to calculate your position then you can start Navigation only after GPS signal received and your position detected by the phone. This usually requires at least 4 or 5 satellites to detect your position. in an open area it might require 2- 6 minutes in average.

As long as it is still "Waiting for GPS" it wont be able to detect your position nor start navigation.

Which type of orbit (polar or geostationary) can satellites be put into as 'navigation beacons'?

Low -Earth orbits are obligatory for several reasons, the most important one being that the emitting power of the beacon goes up as the square of the distance. Geostationary orbits would require 40 times as big a power source, as a beacon in low-Earth orbit would need. |||Heck.. just about any type of orbit. The GPS system utilizes about 28 different, low-Earth orbits for their system. If you want a satellite to remain over one spot, turning with the Earth once per day, then you want a geostationary orbit. |||The polar orbits are better because it covers the same areas (signals not distorted) at different times of the year. Global warming and cooling linked to the sunspot cycle

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn12鈥?/a>

The reversal of the poles is attributed to the harmonic cycle of the magnetic fields of the sun.

Polar reversals can be calculated precisely on the basis of the sunspot cycle theory or the magnetic field theory

A study reveals Global Positioning System receivers to be unexpectedly vulnerable to bursts of radio noise produced by solar flares, created by explosions in the Sun's atmosphere.

When solar activity peaks in 2011 and 2012, it could cause widespread disruption to aircraft navigation and emergency location systems that rely heavily on satellite navigation data

When the solar particles reach our planet, the electromagnetically-loaded particles will move in a spiral along the magnetic lines: from the magnetic north pole to the magnetic south pole and back.

Will devastation happen 2012?|||Yes, the poles will shift. No it's not from the sun. We will be in alignment with our sun and the center of the galaxy, it happens every 25,000 years. The amount of gravity and the magnetic forces will cause our poles to shift, not from the sun spots.|||Why not read a real science book? Solar activity runs in 11 year cycles. This affects snowfall rates, among other things.

The earth is constantly being bombarded by solar particles. It generates something known as auroras.|||Mayan Prophecy? Sure, their calendar ends in 2012. So what? My calendar ends on December 31 this year, it doesn't mean the world is going to end.|||The short answer is: of course not.

As you say: the fluctuations in sunspot activity are regular as the tide -- it has happened over and over in the past, and we still lived to tell about it.|||no. the mayan prophecy won't come true.|||Science does not take the supernatural into consideration. It looks at the facts, and makes determinations based on that.|||We only have a few years to see what will happen so I won't speculate. To add to your info, scientist have perceived a great loss in the earths magnetic field over the last 200 years. Magnetic fields are shifting, this could wreak havoc on our sat elite systems. That big blackout a few years back was caused by the current in the hydro lines abruptly changing to the opposite direction, say if it was flowing south, then wham, its going north. Bee colony collapse is an ominous sign. Could it be the magnetic fields shifting so that bee's are losing their way? It will also happen in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017...|||"The reversal of the poles is attributed to the harmonic cycle of the magnetic fields of the sun."

I stopped reading here. Nothing but Pseudo-scientific hogwash.|||The last sunspot peak occurred in 2001. Prior to that, in 1990. In neither of those years did navigation systems go haywire.

Pole reversals happen with far less frequently. During a pole reversal, it is expected that the Van Allen Belts will be minimal or absent for a period of time, allowing more charged particles to hit the atmosphere directly, rather than channeling to the poles. Since this happens anywhere from 50,000 to 10,000,000 years apart, there is no way to say when the next will be. There is no correlation between increased extinction and pole reversals, so I'm not too worried about it. Also, people often take flights that cross into the arctic circle and are at greatly increased exposure to charged particle radiation, with no ill effects. The Van Allen belts do not eliminate charged particles, they direct them to the poles. That's why we have Aurorae, or Northern Lights.

The biggest impact would be on magnetic compasses, but we rely mostly on GPS these days.

I'm thinking of buying a Honda CR-V but I'm confused on all the trim levels offered. Should I get the LX, EX, EX-L or the EX-L with Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System鈩?

Please advice.

And what colour will look nice?|||l Iike the EX-L in Black.|||The LX gets you the basics like powered accessories, air-conditioning and a CD player. For those who want it all on the uplevel EX-L, the available nav system also includes a rearview camera, satellite radio and a subwoofer.

Does the Garmin Nuvi 350 satellite signal screen take into consideration the non-GPS signals...?

...that the unit can receive?

I am referring to the other signals (not traffic) that are used to make navigation more precise. I forget the abbreviation for these signals. I am wondering if when the unit says that the accuracy is 16 feet, for example, if that is only via the GPS signals or with all available signals. I also don't know how to tell if the unit is currently benefitting from those other signals.|||As far as I know, it uses only the GPS satellite signals. It also 'remembers' where it was, so if you switch it on, it will try to verify that position first. If that doesn't work, it will start looking for satellites in general.

Hope this helps.

Satellite radio xm for my car?

So I have a 2008 lexus is250 no navigation but with satellite ready and the fin antenna on top of my car. Is it possible to get xmradio without a receiver? What would I need to buy? Minimum number of satellite signals?

minimum number of satellite signals required by a GPS navigation system to make an accurate position fix is

a. 1

b. 2

c. 3

d. 4

what is the correct answer?|||in order to get a fully-constrained position based on GPS satellite signals alone, you need a minimum of 4 svs. Under certain conditions (and assumptions), you can get by with 3 but that really depends on the Nav engine of the GPS receiver in question.

A misconception is that more than 4 svs increases accuracy. That is incorrect. More satellites yields:

- a more statistically confident solution (due to overdetermination)

- the ability to detect a bad measurement of a satellite and possibly remove the bad measurement

Do London cab-drivers still have to take a test, even with?

This is to ensure that black cab drivers not only know where to go, but which are the best routes during rush hour and where the alternative routes are when delays occur (e.g. due to roadworks or police road closures).

Mini cab drivers in London habitually use SatNav, but this is frowned on by black cab drivers.

What is an acquisition satellite?

I can't find a definition anywhere, but I think it has something to do with GPS/Aviation navigation. Has anyone heard of it?|||In astronomy terms it is a planetary satellite that did not form with the planet but fell into orbit when it passed too close to the planet. An example would be Mars' two moons Phobos and Deimos.

If you are talking about artificial satellites then it would mean a satellite intended to collect (aquire) information using on board instruments and relay the information back to earth. Examples would be NOAA Weather Satellites and yes I think GPS/Aviation and navigation satellites would also fall into that category... but I'm not sure.

Can you hire sat nav. systems in the UK ? If so where and how much?

I need the use of a satellite navigation system for about a week. It is not worth paying all that money for something I will only use the once. Is there anywhere you can hire them?|||YES you can and for about 拢1.13 a day check out this web site www.zintech.co.uk good luck|||Sorry I don't know about hiring one, but I do have a suggestion. If you don't have any luck, buy one second hand off eBay and then Sell it on once you are done with it. I have a friend that has done this several times with different things he required for a short time. He has even made a profit a couple of times!

Good Luck.|||I know this isn't going to help you directly, but it may give you a little hope. I have just returned from a trip to Holland, and can remember waiting in traffic, and looking at an advert that gave information on Sat. Nav. hire (I speak and read Dutch). As I was only 'passing time' so to speak, I didn't take much notice of the name, but it may well have been Hallfords, so it may be worth checking their U.K. site.

In Fallout, why does your Pipboy show a map of the terrain outside?

I'm not sure if this was explained somewhere. Your Pipboy is given to you by the high-ranking members of the Vault. If they didn't want you to leave the Vault, why did they install software which gave it the ability to know the outside terrain? Surely there would have to be satellite navigation or a pre-conceived map of the Wastelands?

SILLY.|||Good point, but I can explain it. Most Vaults (except 101) were meant to be open at some point, therefore ppl would need to know where they were going. The reason a pipboy 3000 has it is because pipboys are standard tech to every vault all with the same programing (as long as its the same Model)|||I don't believe this ever comes up! What would be the minimum basic requirement for a car other than 4 wheels..?

I have tried to make a list, I wonder if you can add to it or leave a comment?

1. Safety - Belts, Air bags, Side Impact beam.

2. Air-conditioning %26amp; Heater.

2. FM/CD/Mp3 Player.

3. Good Leg room. (dont want to be cramped).

4. Satellite Navigation System. (especially when ur in unfamiliar area).

5. Back Parking Sensor (U dont want to back up onto a kid hiding behind your car).

6. Spoilers - Dont want other car doors to take the carpaint away.

I would say these are an absolute must and should in no way be considered accessories.

I wonder what were the reason for the foll:

1. Moon / Sun Roof - To see the NorthStar? or to talk to God?

2. DVD-with LCD screen Player - What do you watch in a car with all the head-movement for god sake? the News? - I thought thats what the radio was for. I can understanding watching a movie if the Journey was around 3 hrs. or more But if it was so long I would prefer a short nap.

3. Fog Lights - If u drive in thick fog then ur risking ur life.|||Actually the "BARE NECESSITIES" of most vehciles are now,

1. air bags/seat belts- made necessary in late 80's early 90's

2. air conditioning/heater-made necessary in early to mid-80's

3. am/fm radio- never necessary but raised value of car in 50's

4. 4 wheels, engine, transmission, brakes, and body.

Anything else is just accessories. Even Power Steering!!!

To answer the rest of your question...

1. to have the wind in your hair w/o messing it up.

2. it's not for you to watch, it's for your kids, you need to stay focused on the road.Although that never happens...

3. Fog lights do actually help, they provide light low enough to the ground so that you can actually see the ground in a foggy situation.|||4 wheels isn't really a requirement. The first car only had 3.|||Well you can throw away 1 true six. There not regiments. Neither are the other three. So you don't seem to have a clue. What you need is a Fred Flinestone car.And that didn't even have wheels . So it looks like you lose all the way. Good thing your not designing cars.|||I see you don't find the steering wheel important. Guess you should continue to drive your go-cart with the string steering. I also like to have a spare tire, jack and a wheel wrench,. So, there is only one in your list. A heater I can and have travelled without the rest. And I like a comfortable drivers seat with a cloth fabric that was temp controlled.

But it really is moot.

You get what the automanufacturers decide to make. They are the ones who dictate what the car will have in it motorwise, transmission, wheel size...and what it will look like, what color it is gonna be and if it is a gas guzzler or not, whether the wrenches in your tool box is adequate to fix it or they have new fasteners that require new tools; and whether parts are interchangeable from older models.

Choice has been taken away and we are not even aware of it.

Where Is The Best Place To Position Your Sat Nav?

Hi everyone! I am wondering where is the best (i.e safest and best place visually) to position your satellite navigation in the car? Thank you in advance for any answers! I'd really like dealer installed NAV in my new car. Why are they cd driven & not satellite?

I heard if you get navigation "in dash" that it can only be updated by buying cd's to load. The dash mounted types, Garmin, TomTom, receive satellite signals and are constantly updated. I really hate anything on my dash or stuck on the winshield. Why aren't "in dash" kinds satellite driven too? I don't understand why the same antenna that runs your satellite radio couldn't run your nav too? Or maybe you can order one to be installed that is?

If not, how do you know how often to update, and are the cd's expensive?|||I think I see what you are asking, the satellites transmit a signal which your GPS interprets into a position and superimposes the position onto a built in database of maps, both systems whether built in or windshield mounted need to have their map database updated periodically, the new tom toms you can just hook them to your computer and update from their website. The built in models you need to buy CD's. Your position is updated continuously, the maps you need to update yourself. Sat radio and GPS receive different signals so different antennas, on cars with factory antennas you don't even see them.|||Nissan "Zen Ren" DVDs are $145 each and get updated every 3 or four years. Nissan system uses global positioning too. It is just the software files are so massive all the roads of the western hemisphere ponits of interest, malls ect... Most of the in cars sytems have some advantages the TOM TOM and Garmin do not. Like not breaking a side window reaching in and steal it...There gos $500 not covered by your insurance unless you pay extra.|||The disc only contains the map that you see on the screen. The country side is constantly changing with new roads, neighborhoods, and infrastructure. The map must be updated in order for the system to be accurate. Whether it be by download or disc, all nav systems require that the maps be updated.

They all use the GPS system, it's how your nav knows where you are on earth and then displays the little arrow as it moves along the map.

As far as antennas go, a regular old car radio antenna doesn't have enough surface area to receive a sattelite signal.

What Makes a GPS Navigation System "IFR Approved"?

I heard it had to be permanently mounted, it must acquire a certain number of satellites and have barometric altimeter encoded in. What's the real deal on IFR certification requirements for primary navigation with GPS? What prevents a portable from ever becoming instrument certified?|||In the US the FAA uses two specifications for IFR GPS installations they are covered by a technical standard order, TSO C129 (A1) and TSO C129 (A2). A1 being en route, terminal and non-precision approach-certified (A2) drops the approach ability. Those TSO's have specific installed requirements and tests. You simply can't meet those requirements with a portable unit, RAIM (Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring) is one area where portables have issues among others.

Even the remote altimeter requires wiring as does the required remote display head (CDI) and soon you have so many wires that HAVE TO CONNECT there is no easy quick way to have the unit still portable.

You can read the TSO at http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidan鈥?/a>

With the costs of getting a unit approved under those orders, which is not insignificant, there are no portables that have done it nor is there a good reason for the manufacturer to do it and accept the liability involved.|||An IFR certified GPS unit has to be permanently installed, tested and certified as part of the total aircraft navigation system. A portable unit just doesn't qualify by the FAA standards.|||Certified accuracy within limits established by FAA for use in the IFR system at least the same as VOR navigation.

How do you use the tuner instead of channel preset navigation on a pioneer DEH-P8600mp car stereo?

Hi - I somehow set my Pioneer DEH-P8600MP car stereo to navigate satellite radio channels only by channel presets. I can't navigate from category to category. If I push up or down on the multi-function button, the tuner goes through the various station presets. I used to be able to navigate through the satellite radio categories by pushing up on down on the multifunction button. Also, I cannot enter station numbers using the remote. If I push a number on the remote it goes to the preset. If I push a number that does not correspond to a preset, nothing happens. Thanks in advance for any help.

Dave|||I'd suggest using the "search" option vs. the preset. It's usually the same option that changes tracks in the cd mode.

Why it that the Car-Models introduced in different region diffrent or the car-makers simply racist?

The carc introduced in the USA and the European countries have the latest accessories, electronics %26amp; technology while the ones of the same models introduced in Middle-East just have the least of the accessories, electronics %26amp; technology. eg: Blootooth, Mp3 Player, Satellite Navigation, Parking Sensor, Woofer Speakers, Central Lock, Keyless Entry, etc.But the price is the almost the same.

If you introduce these cars without these things then they should cost less. Just by taking away the Satellite navigation system should make the Model cheaper by $ 1,000 minimum.|||The resaon is tarrifs imposed by other countries and the dollar conversion rate. A car might seem more expensive but if our dollar is valued at twice the rate of there currency then it well cost twice as much in there currency. Also it costs alot of money to ship a vehicle overseas. Thats one of the reasons general motors bought the daewoo company out, they didn't want there cars, they wanted acess to there factories and there location in asia, trust me race doesn't make a difference its just about cost and profit!|||The oil money in the middle east only goes to the elite few. Most people can't afford those luxury items, so it doesn't make sense to sell them.|||oneword profits..|||1. Have you considered where this vehicle was assembled and shipping and handling costs?

2. The market in which the cars are sold is also important. This is influenced by the variety of cars available in a certain country. If there isn't a lot of different car available in a certain place the price tends to be higher.

In North America/Europe there is a great variety of american, japanese, korean, german, etc. car available so prices tend to be lower. The North American car buyer is different because they want a high amount of quality for lowest price. That makes competition among vehicle manufacturers tough!

Satellite Navigations Systems?

what is the best of the sat navs|||tom tom 920 is the ultimate tool|||TomTom is pretty good. It's easy to use %26amp; update, but it does have weaknesses. For example in rural areas it sometimes takes you miles along minor roads when there's a more major road alternative, %26amp; in town it seems not to know about direct routes other than major roads that all the locals use. Still, if you follow its directions it will usually get you there reliably enough. Sometimes it can confuse you on roundabouts saying things like "take the second exit" when it really means the third exit, so you should check the map screen. But one of its major advantages is that it quickly recalculates if you take a wrong turn %26amp; doesn't keep telling you to turn round unless there's no alternative.

Some satnav systems don't automatically recalculate %26amp; you have to stop %26amp; reset them, otherwise they still tell you to turn round even if you rejoin their original route further on.

You'll always hear stories of directions being out of date, for example ending up in a pub car-park as you've been directed to a bridge across a river (it was the Severn) that no longer exists. But the map databases are constantly being updated so this sort of thing shouldn't be a regular problem, but it will happen from time to time on any system. The important thing is that you can update the software easily.

As satnavs develop, more stuff will be added. There is another (rather expensive) system that updates as you drive to avoid traffic jams, but unless you're white van man on time bonus rates, you probably won't find the extra investment worth it just yet. The French already have randonees available for walkers, not likely yet in the UK, but the possibilities are limitless.

You may also find some of the other features useful, like a warning that you're speeding %26amp; it tells you where all the fixed safety cameras are, but don't get overconfident as it can't detect ad hoc speedtraps.

You pay your money %26amp; take your choice, then get used to the way it works on routes you know before relying on it.|||tom tom go 720 rules!|||I have the cheapest one on the market... tomtom1 and it even has blue tooth!

Is there a bike with built-in computer sensor for heart rate, calorie burn, distance, average speed etc?

I would like to buy a good touring bicycle available with sensors similar to those on some exercise bikes that pick up your pulse from the hand-held grips, give you feedback on your heart rate, the calories you have burned, the distance you have covered and your average speed. Alternatively, is there a good quality and easy to fit add-on to my bicycle, perhaps one that includes satellite navigation?|||Unfortunately there are no bikes or wheels with built in sensors. The reason is that everyone likes something different when it comes to this. There are so many aftermarket computers to track mileage, speed, etc. that it may take you a while to figure out exactly what you need. Computers from Cateye are great and offer a full range of cycling measurement. Polar brand adds heart rate monitoring and other measurements of your bodies performance. They tend to be more expensive. There are no integrated GPSs yet. But i'd imagine they are coming down the road.

My personal preference is toward wireless computers. They are easy to install and don't clutter your bike with more wires.|||Yes there is, a gps manufacturer makes a couple of models that monitor heart beat, speed, mileage, etc. Go to ebay and search gps bike monitor or gps bike

Since satellite dishes have to face the southern sky, and they both use the same satellites, why don't navaigations systems also have to face the southern skies?|||Navigation satellites are not in geosynchronous orbit but in lower altitude inclined orbits. The receiver needs several satellites to be visible in different directions in order to triangulate your position.|||Hi. Most navigation satellites are equatorial based. Some are not, such as the "Iridium" telecommunication system. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iridium_(sa鈥?/a> So those antennas in the northern hemisphere DO tend to face south (towards the equator).|||The GPS satellites are not the same as the communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit. GPS satellites are in lower orbits, and their gerater signal strength means that a directional dish antenna isn't needed.|||You have confused geostationary communication satellites, which are in a ring above earth's equator, with GPS satellites, which are in various orbits, not geostationary, and with various inclinations (tilts).|||Most communications satellites are in Geosynchronous orbit, which is directly over the equator. If you were south of the equator, the antennas point north. At the Equator, they point straight up. The angle of the dish is equal to the latitude you are at on the earth.

http://science.nasa.gov/realtime/rocket_鈥?/a>

The longitude determines how much they point to the left or right of vertical to where the satellite is in the sky.

'GPS' positioning systems work by picking up signals from at least two satellites of the many overhead. Which can be at any angle.

Why doesn't every private hire/taxi driver carry a Sat Nav device?

I know that nowadays many taxis do have satellite navigation, but I had a hackney carriage a couple of weeks ago who did not know the place I was going to in the town! I couldn't help either as I was a visitor, so the driver was stopping every so often to ask passers-by for directions-not what you need in a rush!

Is there any reason (other than cost, that would be recouped in the long run in time petrol from fewer incorrect routes taken) why licensing authorities shouldn't insist on sat nav for every taxi/private hire driver?|||coz they cost money and as you all know-taxi drivers are tighter than a ducks rear end!|||I asked a question about taxi drivers not knowing where they were going have a look, interesting!!

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind鈥?/a>|||i thought not knowing where you want to go, having foul smelling cabs, taking the most indirect route and feigning a lack of knowledge of the local lingua-franca was compulsory for taxi drivers. it is here|||I agree with you that every taxi should be fitted with one.|||Well I would have got out and seeked another taxi.

He was obviously an imposter something nasty could have happened to you.

You have to be careful when excepting lifts from strangers.|||A good taxi driver should know his routes and not rely on a satnav. Haven't you heard about all the disasters that have occurred when ambulance %26amp; lorry drivers have relied on them %26amp; ended up miles away from where they intended or stuck up a narrow lane somewhere?|||cos they dont know how to use one,,,

How can I get the GPS screen of a 2007 Acura TL S to also play DVDs and recieve satellite signals to watch TV?

I heard that there's some kind of chip that I can buy so that I could have everything on just the built-in navigation screen. I would like to get this done to my sister's car before Christmas. I would appreciate any information that might help me get this.|||Just another urban legend.|||Actually, it isn't an urban legend.

A good number of people have been able to successfully modify their Acura TL navigation systems to play DVDs, route to a car PC, or connect with a slingbox to receive satellite TV (since a true satellite receiver is large and expensive)

A good place to start: acurazine!

(look at source)

good luck!

I will say though, the Acura TL's navigation system and electronics are very complex and wires are routed from front to back. With the '07, it's gotten even more complex, with the rear view camera and XM navtraffic receiver!|||I thought you would need a flat sattilite dish on your car like some people have from Direct TV on their Excursions and Suburbans, but WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT WHILE DRIVING? People that have these are for the back seat passengers... THAT IS RECKLESS!!!!!

What parts do I need for my XM Ready car to start receiving XM?

The car is a XM Ready 2006 Honda Civic 4 door sedan EX with satellite navigation. The stereo is the original from the dealership.

From the Honda website "XM Ready audio system is pre-wired to accept the dealer installed accessory XM Satellite Radio hardware." I need to know what that hardware consists of.|||Did you purchase the XM option from the dealer when you bought the car? If not, you could always go back and have them do it. That would look the best, the cleanest with the least amount of wires around, or you could take it to Best Buy and have them install it for you. Either way after that the only equipment you need is a credit card.

Good Luck!

There are four parts to the honda xm accessory kit - here are the part numbers, I just found this for you on e-bay.

Does anyone knowe a good Car hire company in the USA?

We're going in September to California and we were after a convertible for 2 weeks, to be picked up from San Francisco and dropped off in Vegas. We also needed two extra drivers and Satellite Navigation.

I'm having trouble finding a site that offers all of this.

Thank you!|||as others have mentioned, Dollar and Alamo are both good companies to try. Last time we went to the USA we booked a car with www.yescarhire.com and got very good rates.|||Have you tried Alamo?|||Try Enterprise - they've always come through for me.|||hertz are good get the shelby mustang convertible|||I have used Hertz and Dollar in the U.S and both companies were good although Dollar seemed to have the cleaner cars, they also do drop off at another destination to the pick up point, but I think they all will if they have an office in your destination point. How about the Chrysler Sebring Convertible...so pretty and a little bigger than the Mustang convertible

Where does all the information on the Internet come from?

I thought it was via satellite, but a relative says not, because it needs a telephone line? When buying a Satellite navigation system it has to be left outdoors for a period of time to line up with satellite? That's when the conversation began! I had visions of all my deleted e-mails floating around in the Universe?? what does happen to our deletes? This is why I am named Techno blonde!|||you said satelite.. remember that you are talking about GPS navigation which is nothing more than..

A radio that gets messages from different satelites then it takes the message it "Heard" and uses some math and gets your postition on earth. the more satelites the better the postition it "figures" for you.

the internet which is on your computer i.e. your deleted email.. is "housed" in different areas. the internet is carried basicly by special wires/fiber optics accross the US.. at all major cities the wire/fiber optics are then "broken" off for that cities so you can get local carriers who bring it to your house..

I have very over simplified the internet but I was just trying to explan the differences that you asked.|||All the stuff you see on your computer screen are just some electrical signals arranged in an meaningful order that are represented by 1's and 0's. So the deleted data means removed electrical signals which were stored in the computer.

By the way the WWW or the world wide web is the total network of computers in the globe. which could be inter connected by telephone lines, satellites, optic cables, etc... So Internet is the small portion of the WWW. That is consisted of Pictures and other stuff. So there's your answer hope you are happy.|||The information came from powerful computers called servers. These servers are stored on earth.

When you delete an email, the computer just makes itself know that more disk space is available. The email may not be completely gone from the computer until the space is override.|||your question seems confused?

do you mean where does all the information come from thats posted on the web or where does how does the information get to me?

What two instruments made navigation much easier in the 1900s?

A. Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) and two-way radio

B. The chronometer and the astrolab

C. The cross-staff and the compass.

D. The chronometer and the compass.|||Both radio and GPS were invented before 1999, and that counts as part of the 1900s, so I say A.|||D|||GPS wasnt invented til the 1990s

The compas was around for centuries before 1900.

the only answer left is B, even though i have no idea what an astrolab is|||A.|||B. because both of these instruments were implemented greatly in the 1900's while the cross staff was common in the 1600's and compass has been around since who knows when.

Where can I download Renault Carminat maps?

Hi,

I recently bought a 2002 Vel Satis with built-in Satellite Navigation, but the disc did not come with the car.

I've googled it and come across nothing but websites that make you sign up for something, or download a pathetic software programme or sign up for a trial etc first.

Can anyone please offer a direct link, or something similar.

Much appreciated, thanks.|||I think it might be a TomTom system. If it is then you are restricted to buying from TomTom or renault dealers. If the disk was missing then the seller ought to have supplied it or given you a discount for the missing bit|||2002 model it will be a Renault Carminat system. The drive will be in the boot or under the seat. To update it contact Navteq who can supply the discs. I did for my Clio Renaultsport 182 which has the same system. It is definitely NOT a TOM TOM these were hardly out back in 2002!!!

Hi fellow seniors, do you have a good sense of direction?

In the navigating sense.

I've a poor sense of direction and often get flummoxed when leaving a shop and wonder which was the way in.

Hubby is a little better than me but we do occasionally get lost in the car even on a short journey.

So I was wondering do you think we would benefit from a Satellite Navigation System (I've heard they're not infallible) or just buy an up to date road map, what do you think?|||No.....My wife changes the furniture in the bedroom so often that when I get up during the night to visit the smallest room, i've forgotten where the bed is when I get back to the room. My knee is now used mainly as a device for locating hard wooden objects in the dark.|||I usually EVENTUALLY manage to get where I want to go....although, sometimes, with new streets being built and old streets not going where they used to go....it does involve some wandering around. I must like it more than I would like to admit, as do carry one of those spiral-bound city mapbooks in my trunk, but hardly ever stop the car, get out, get the mapbook, and figure out where I am.

As long as the sun is shining, I can at least figure out what is east or west....cloudy days is an entirely different matter.

My car is an old one, and what I would like to have is not necessarily that navigational system thing...but more the thing that notifies someone if the car dies, or has a wreck, or helps police to locate my car if I disappear and someone in my family figures out that something is wrong %26amp; calls for help to figure out where me and my car have gotten to.

As you can tell from my answer, I am far from a technological whiz-kid, but it does seem that the system...if it includes that "homing beam" thingie seems like a good idea to me. Get it and get a new map, too.|||Yes and my step son's sat nav drives me crazy! He uses it even when the journey is from A to B on the motorway and the only choice you have to make is to follow the directions to the Airport and then keep on until you see the signs for your exit, which you already know. Not only that, his sat nav speaks Turkish! If I hear 'U莽 kilometre sonra, direk.' (In three kilometres, straight on) once more, I'll scream! Especially since direk isn't even correct Turkish for straight on - it's just navigation speak.

I do, however, sometimes get lost in buildings, but that's nothing to do with age. I always did.|||The GPS systems do work; I've seen them in action. My sense of direction has always been good, that is, until we moved to the last town we lived in. It is situated right off the highway, just before the highway goes from straight north to north west. Consequently, every time I get off at that exit, I'm lost as far as direction goes. What is actually east/west always seems like north/south to me. It's just that particular town; any place else my sense of direction kicks in pretty well.|||My husband occasionally loses his way, but rarely. He travels on his job so he has to have a sense of direction. I do pretty good. I know my north south east and west most times to keep me halfway straight. lol We don't have any GPS in our vehicle, as we do not need it for the little traveling we do. My husband will have a new company vehicle in the Spring and it will be equipped with the GPS. I think if you do a lot of traveling, it is a good idea.|||I live in a state that looks like a giant quilt from an airplane. Most roads run north-south or east-west because of the crops. It's usually a mile to the next intersection. While I'm in Iowa, I have a perfect sense of direction. However, I lived in Marietta, GA for a few years where the roads follow old paths, I heard. I couldn't tell which way I was headed. The sun and constellations came in handy a few times.|||I do but my husband does not.He is impulsive about guessing directions on roads,in shops etc %26amp; often wrong which infuriates me so I generally take over all the navigation. One of my sisters has never been able to tell left from right which is worrying when she drives.|||I was told in the Armed Forces (where they would take us out into the swamp and give us a map and a compass and coordinates to find using just those two things) that I have the homing instincts of the best pigeons! They couldn't "lose me" no matter what they did--including blindfolding me to try to make sure I couldn't "see" where I was going. I always seem to know exactly where North is. Maybe I have a high level of magnetite in my brain? That would also help explain why I become so dizzy during earthquakes!

Think about it?|||I have no sense of direction. My father used to say that I couldn't find my way out of a wet paper bag with a road map. The GPS systems are great for some, but I'm told not totally reliable. If construction changes things, the GPS doesn't know that|||I have a terrible sense of direction.Once I leave my right and left hand I'm on Mapquest. That is why I do not have a sense of adventure in the form of traveling.Like my cats,I'm not comfortable outside familiar environments.|||I always thought that my sense of direction was good, esp if I have time to plan my route, but one evening last week I got 'lost' in my local Tesco car park just because I went in by a different entrance.|||Not to brag, but yes.

However, if you decide on a GPS - have a map handy, as backup. Better to have it, and don't need it, than need it, and don't have it.|||Thank goodness for sat nav in cars. If I am on holiday in a strange town/city, after coming out of a shop, I can never remember which direction I was going. ha ha. Maybe that's an age thing.|||No I have an appalling sense of direction..

even routes i`m familiar with..I am also hopeless at

reading maps I don't know how I ever get where I want to be.

I`m getting really hard of hearing so I cant use a sat nav..|||I have a good sense of direction but occasionally get confused with England's roundabouts and with U.S. cloverleafs if I'm in unfamiliar territory|||If you travel alot, yes. You can always stop and ask for directions too. Best wishes.|||Excellent.|||Just call me the get lost kid. I have a messed up sense of direction. Lol.|||Always been able to find my way If ever I can't I ask someone for directions.|||No, not at all. As a matter of fact, I could easily get turned around in a telephone booth !|||I travel a lot for work, as a result I rock.|||I must tell the truth, I have no sense of direction at all.|||Oh, heck no! Sometimes I am not even sure which way is up!|||You'll be well aware I'm the LAST person to brag - but (when not in pitch blackness) I must admit my sense of direction and map-reading skills are very, supremely EXCELLENT.

Straight up - I passed COURSES on reading ordnance survey maps under the watchful eye of the military brass- and even they were amazed at the way I could work out co-ordinates, bombing range, elevations and stuff - faster than they could reload or re-charge their batteries.

So - getting 'lost' on even our crazy road systems - twixt Betjeman's Rime Intrinsica, Fontmell Magna, Sturminster Newton and Melbury Bubb etc - has never been a problem.

But I hear SatNav stuff can screw up such sojourns something rotten - with Dutch. Belgian and/or Lithuanian lorry drivers causing havoc in our smaller hamlets.

Whenever wandering/exploring/discovering the English countryside, my wife's hopeless. hapless, pathetic map-reading deficiencies caused many an angry exchange.

Reading a map the right way up was asking too much - reading it upside down (N/S) threw her into a total tiswas - when asked "Left or right here ?"

However, happy days of fond recall - and I doubt SatNav have 'ironed out' all the usual teething problems. And will never cope with road signs reading NO this, NO that and NONE of the other, etc.

Where I reside, our Parish Councillors have used some of our Ip in the 拢 of Council Taxes - to pay for NO HOSPITAL PARKING in our by-roads. Official looking - they're nonetheless illegal - so patrolling Town Road Planning OFFICERS keep knocking them over. They're not 'empowered' to take them away - but in case they're ever tempted to, our local Parish Reps have recently spent more - to padlock such unofficial signs to the official street signs.

Power to the people !!!

I doubt the day will ever come when SatNav or whoever will ever cope with such things - never mind a maverick 'local' erecting SIGNS of his/her own design - redirecting unwanted traffic up the back end of beyond.

Is it possible to upgrade my ipaq to Windows Mobile 2007?

I have an hp IPAQ h1940 running windows CE 4.20. For instance instead of running a couple dozen wires in a thick bundle into the driver's door for the power windows, locks, mirrors, and sometimes seat you could potentially just run 4 wires with them being power, ground, CAN +, and CAN -. In your case I am guessing you want to disable the VSS input because some parts of the nav are locked out while the car is moving, right? Since a wire isn't actually labelled VSS I think you will find that the vehicle speed info is just a packet on the CAN bus and filtering it out would be difficult.

I have recently brought a Nissan Navara Aventura 2006 with the built in DVD Satellite Navigation system built in (fixed Screen) Does anyone know how i can play normal DVD's because i've tried inserting a DVD into the box (located underneath the drivers seat) and nothing happens. Thanks in advance|||you cant...the system isnt compatible.|||If the screen is in the dashboard, then it won't work as it's illegal to drive while watching so must only be visible to rear seat passengers. You should have screens on the back of the front seat head rests.|||DVD navigation + Screen does not mean DVD player. The Nav box below your seat is capable of reading a DVD but only knows what navigation files are. It does not have (for example: Media player/Divx/etc) movie capabilities.

In order for your screen to play a DVD you need to get a DVD player (one small enough that it will either fit in the trunk, under a seat, or in a glove box. And you will have to connect it to the screen (by removing it and seeing if it has any aux inputs (which I doubt it will seeing as how it's a stock Screen) - Probably only has 1 hardwire input for the nav. It's possible to remove the nav and replace it with the DVD player, but you might lose your Nav capabilities (or you'll need a splitter with a switch so you can choose which device you want to input to the screen). It'll probably be more work than necessary and watching DVDs while driving is dangerous.|||It is illegal to watch TV when you are driving sorry the kids can buy DVD machine which can be hung over seat in back of driver|||you will find the nav system wont be able to read the movie disc, you would need to get a portable dvd player and hook it into the auxiliary on the nav screen, may be cheaper to get a portable screened dvd player that hangs on the head rest of the front seats so your kids can watch in the back, that way you will also keep onside with the law, cheers

OKay i was wondering if there is a way to play dvds on this navigation system. I found ways of changing the welcome screen so this is a sign that there are things that could be changed.. i was wondering if there is a way to play dvds. I have the 09' civic with the satellite linked navigation system from honda.|||No because most likely it doesn't have a built in player. If it did then they would have told you it when they sold you the car so they could of tacked on another $1000. Good Luck

Another thing is that Honda would never put a player in the front console because of the safety hazards. The last thing Honda wants is someones suing them because someone crashed because they were watching a movie when they were driving

Why do we use satellites rather than broadcast towers for navigation?

It would seem more economical to build and maintain towers than launch things into orbit.|||GPS system is already in place, for aircraft, spacecraft, and ship navigation. So why not use it for autos, instead of developing a (more expensive) new system with millions of towers?

.|||both are used in different ways

terrestrial radar is the primary method for navigation both airborne and nautical vessels

GPS augments this by allowing active local [i.e., shipboard] position information and control

advantages of orbital navigation include a primary concern for security - it is much harder to shoot down a sattelite than it is to take out a radar or broadcast tower|||Draw a circle (the earth). Now draw a tiny mast on one side and a tiny you on the other side. Can you see it? No. Can you communicate?...No

Now put a satellite in space mid way between you and the mast. Can you see it?...yes...can the transmitter see it...yes...OK Now you can communicate.

So you can have 1 satellite that everyone can see or millions of transmitters because of the earth's curvature.

Now which is more economic?|||okay you have it kinda wrong..... the signal goes from the GPS to the tower then up to the satellites then back down threw the tower then back to your GPS. so we use both..... and its actually more efficient to go straight from satellite to GPS, stronger signal and faster, and less cost, and less cancer for the rest of us living
