Why doesn't every private hire/taxi driver carry a Sat Nav device?

I know that nowadays many taxis do have satellite navigation, but I had a hackney carriage a couple of weeks ago who did not know the place I was going to in the town! I couldn't help either as I was a visitor, so the driver was stopping every so often to ask passers-by for directions-not what you need in a rush!

Is there any reason (other than cost, that would be recouped in the long run in time petrol from fewer incorrect routes taken) why licensing authorities shouldn't insist on sat nav for every taxi/private hire driver?|||coz they cost money and as you all know-taxi drivers are tighter than a ducks rear end!|||I asked a question about taxi drivers not knowing where they were going have a look, interesting!!

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/ind鈥?/a>|||i thought not knowing where you want to go, having foul smelling cabs, taking the most indirect route and feigning a lack of knowledge of the local lingua-franca was compulsory for taxi drivers. it is here|||I agree with you that every taxi should be fitted with one.|||Well I would have got out and seeked another taxi.

He was obviously an imposter something nasty could have happened to you.

You have to be careful when excepting lifts from strangers.|||A good taxi driver should know his routes and not rely on a satnav. Haven't you heard about all the disasters that have occurred when ambulance %26amp; lorry drivers have relied on them %26amp; ended up miles away from where they intended or stuck up a narrow lane somewhere?|||cos they dont know how to use one,,,
