Does satellite navigation system in a car atrract a monthly fee to the provider of that service?

No..the "provider" of the GPS "service" is the US govt. The civilian signal is free to use. The only add-ons to navigation systems that require a monthly fee is the newer traffic overlay that is available on a few models like the newer Acura RL. The traffic information is relayed through the XM satellite network (if you can call two satellites a network) and is only available to subscribers.

XM also offers XM weather as a subscription service on top of radio, but there are only a handful of GPS units that can take advantage of that service currently.|||They shouldn't... I have an old gps receive and its totally independent, no subscriptions whatsoever. However, services like "OnStar" do require monthly payments, not sure if they do gps or not.
