How does Galileo (satellite navigation) work?

tried googling the question but all i could find was who's building it not how it works.

How is the system able to achieve better accuracy than gps. Is it like an augmented gps?|||They're all GPS systems that use geostationary satellites to pinpoint distance and location. However, chip sensitivity and accuracy can be widely different. Some systems are accurate to 50 feet, some to 15. The best consumer ones might give you 5-10 foot accuracy. Military spec (using the exact same satellites and technology) is allowed far, far greater accuracy.

When you realize that those satellites began military use in the 70's (when people were listening to AM radios) then it's scary to imagine what capabilities are now.
